If you’re looking for a deliciously spooky treat, then look no further than Shane Smith’s creepy Halloween bat balls! Blitzed Oreo biscuits mixed with cream cheese before being covered in rich dark chocolate and decorated with chocolate bat wings and edible eyes. Best of all, these fiendish chocolatey bites are so simple to make and require no baking!

Method

  1. Using the Kenwood food processor attachment, pop the Oreo biscuits inside and blitz until a fine crumb is reached.
  2. Place these crumbs into a bowl along with the cream cheese and vanilla and mix until a smooth paste is formed.
  3. Divide this biscuit mixture into 8 equal portions, roll each one between your hands to form a smooth ball and pop into the fridge to chill for 35minutes.
  4. While they’re chilling, place the chocolate pieces into a bowl and you can melt this over a pot of warm water or in a microwave, giving it short 10 second bursts until melted.
  5. To pipe the bat wings I printed off a free online stencil and placed a sheet of parchment paper on top.
I filled my small piping bag with some chocolate and I piped directly on top of the parchment paper using the stencil as a guide. You’ll need 16 wings in total so it’s not a bad idea to do a few extra in case one breaks.
  6. You don't need to use a stencil and you can freehand the design too.
  7. Pop these into the fridge/freezer for 20 minutes to firm up.
  8. Once the chocolate bat wings are set, it's time to decorate the biscuit balls.
  9. Using a fork, carefully drop one ball at a time into the melted chocolate and roll around until completely covered.
  10. Remove and place onto a lined baking tray, at this point when the chocolate is still soft, you need to add on the edible sugar eyes and the bat wings.
  11. Once decorated, pop back into the fridge until needed & enjoy every bat bite.

Chef's Notes:

  1. The balls can be made in advance and frozen uncovered with chocolate for up to 3 months.
  2. If you can't get edible sugar eyes, you can use melted white chocolate instead.
  3. Try to pipe the bat wings nice and thick as you’ll need to stick them into the side of the biscuit balls, if they're very delicate, they can break easily.
