In order to remove limescale deposits from around the lid of your kettle we would recommend a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts water.You may need to soak a kitchen towel in the solution and leave on the marks if they have been left for a long time.Only use a nonabrasive cloth to remove, such as a microfibre cloth.We would not recommend most proprietary descalers as these can often damage the paint on enamelled kettles.To avoid a build-up, particularly in hard water areas, do this monthly after you have descaled your kettle.

How do I descale my kettle?

To prolong the life of your new kettle, descaling should be carried out on a regular basis. The frequency required will depend on your water hardness. If you have particularly hard water we would recommend the kettle is descaled every month. For very soft water areas we would recommend that you descale your kettle every three months. Care should be taken with proprietary kettle descaler as these could damage the surface finish of the kettle. Please ensure you follow the instructions carefully. If you do not want to use a proprietary descaler we would recommend a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts water. Switch the kettle on, remembering to switch it off just before the boiling point. Leave the solution in the kettle for a while, dependant on the severity of the scale inside and then empty the kettle. Refill with fresh water, boil, empty and repeat this process once more. Your kettle can now be used. If you have missed a descale it may be worth leaving the solution overnight.

This is more than likely due to limescale build up.Limescale in some parts of the country can manifest itself as a red / brown deposit due to minerals naturally occurring in the water or on rare occasions sediment from the water supply pipes.Descaling your kettle should remove the deposit.To reduce limescale build up use filtered water.

Check the kettle has not been overfilled, as it will spill water when boiling if this happens. Also, check the kettle has not been dipped into water slightly when you were filling it, as this is quite common when filling over a kitchen sink. Dry the base completely and place it back onto the base. If no further water is noted, this is likely to be the case. To avoid leaks, ensure your kettle is descaled every 1 to 3 months.

All kettles regardless of manufacture will make a noise while boiling. Your kettle will get noisier as it reaches boiling point. Once your kettle has boiled the noise will get lower. All kettles are designed to boil quickly, thus saving energy. If your kettle has had a lot of use and shows signs of scale on the element, descaling will help to reduce the noise.

The kettle may be overfilled which can cause spitting/over-boil. If the kettle has just been descaled check the solution has been completely rinsed away because this can also cause over-boil.

If your kettle is brand new it should be boiled and refilled three times before use. If it is an older kettle descaling with white vinegar may help. To establish where the taste is coming from it may be worth making two hot drinks- one from your kettle and one using water from a saucepan and comparing the two. water taste can be affected by many factors.
