  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. Lightly grease two baking sheets. Place the flour, salt and butter in the Kenwood Bowl and mix with the K Beater at minimum speed until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  2. Add the cheese and chilli powder and continue mixing until combined. Add the egg and mix to a smooth dough.
  3. On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough into an oblong 12.5cm (5 inches) wide and about 7mm (¼ inch) thick. Cut in half and brush with egg glaze. Sprinkle one half with sesame seeds and the other with poppy seeds.
  4. Cut into sticks 1.2cm (½ inch) wide. Place on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden. Leave to cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack.


175g (6oz) plain flour

75g (3oz) butter, cut into pieces
50g (2oz) Cheddar or Emmental cheese, grated
5ml (1 tsp) mild chilli powder
1 egg
beaten egg, to glaze
sesame seeds and poppy seeds, to sprinkle
